WOMEN AT THE WALL response

"She kisses the name on its forhead, that way mothers do". This is, in my opinion, one of the most well written lines in the poem. It shows two important ideas that are seen throughout the poem; the mothers love for her boy, and the idea that her son is dead. I found it really interesting how the son is replaced by his name. The mothers actions are not for her physical son but his name, it is very creative. The poem also demonstrates how the mother longs for her son to be home and safe. To make his name come back to life and to lie in his bed once more.

  1. When I first read this poem I had no clue what it was saying! I didn't even think that the son was dead and that his mother was in a sense mourning for him. I'm really glad I read someone elses opinion about this poem, its nice that now I too can actually have an opinion about this piece of work.

  7. I also didn't understand the poem until I read through twice and read the line, that way mother do, that made me understand.

  8. I agree. I thought this poem was a little confusing at first, but as you began to read, so much information came spilling out. In that line, you found out she is a mother who deeply loved her son that had passed away. I thought that that stanza was one of the important lines in the whole poem because you could really get a sense of what the mother was going through.

  9. I read this poem over at least 5 times before it really made and impact. It really hits emotionally especially if you have ever lost someone close you always wish that it was just a dream and they will one day just appear back in your life. I think it hurt the mother to speak of her sons name aloud since he is no longer with her.
